Package Configuration

Package Configuration describes the shape, size, material and other aspects of the device’s packaging. Packaging can be categorized by function, by type of product being packaged, by packaging material and so on. Packaging can also be categorized based on level or layering.

Typically the different levels or layers of packaging are:

  • Primary packaging

is the material that first envelops the product and holds it. This usually is the smallest unit of distribution or use and is the package which is in direct contact with the contents. Typically this would be a pouch or plastic bag which is sealed.
  • Secondary packaging

is outside the primary packaging, perhaps used to group primary packages together. This could be a corrugated shipping container or a folding carton.
